About Destin

Welcome to Destin, Florida — the heart of the Emerald Coast and home to Tailfins Waterfront Grill. Known as the World’s Luckiest Fishing Village, Destin pairs sugar-white quartz sand and clear emerald water with one of the largest charter fishing fleets in Florida. Here’s a little about the town we call home, the famous Crab Island sandbar just off the harbor, and the Tailfins Tikis that’ll take you there.

A Little Destin History

Destin owes its name to Captain Leonard Destin, a fisherman from New London, Connecticut, who first worked these Gulf waters in the 1830s and settled here in the years that followed. The fishing was so good that the village — and eventually the city — took his name, and the seafaring heritage he started still runs through town today.

Destin sits where the Gulf of Mexico meets Choctawhatchee Bay through the East Pass, and the deep water of the 100-fathom curve runs closer to shore here than anywhere else in Florida. That fast deep-water access is how the town earned its nickname, the World’s Luckiest Fishing Village, and built the largest charter fleet in the state.

You can still feel it on the Destin Harbor, where the boats head out at dawn and return to dockside weigh-ins, seafood markets, and waterfront restaurants. Every October the Destin Fishing Rodeo — running since 1948 — fills the boardwalk for a full month of daily weigh-ins. Tailfins sits right in the middle of it, serving lunch and dinner and dockside breakfast with harbor views.

Crab Island

Just north of the Marler Bridge, where the East Pass opens into Choctawhatchee Bay, you’ll find Crab Island — Destin’s most popular sandbar. Despite the name, it isn’t really an island at all. It’s a wide stretch of shallow, bright-turquoise water where boats drop anchor, music plays, and floating vendors serve up food and drinks all day long.

It’s a true Destin bucket-list stop: waist-deep emerald water, paddleboards and floats, vendor boats, and one of the best places anywhere to soak up the harbor. Because the sandbar is tidal, the water changes through the day — it’s always worth a look at the Crab Island tide chart before you head out.

Tailfins Tikis to Crab Island

The easiest way to reach Crab Island is aboard Tailfins Tikis — our captain-led floating tiki boats that depart right from the Destin Harbor. Each octagon tiki comes with a licensed captain, an onboard restroom, a Bluetooth sound system, inflatables, coolers, and ice, so all you bring is your crew.

Pick a shared tiki ticket for smaller groups, book a private tiki charter for up to 18 guests — perfect for birthdays, bachelorette parties, and family days — or catch a sunset tiki for the best chance to spot dolphins in the harbor.

Make it a full Destin day: tiki out to Crab Island, then tie up for fresh Gulf seafood at Tailfins Waterfront Grill, just steps from the tiki docks.
